Ultra Sour is Ultra Sweet

Appetite stimulating cannabis strains are not my typical go-to when shopping for weed, but when you’ve got the munchies, nothing else will do — it turns out.

Like millions of others this summer, I experienced body aches, nausea, night sweats, and chills following my second COVID-19 vaccine. But even more unbearable were the hunger pangs I felt upon returning to life 24 hours later.

The familiar gnawing sensation in my gut was ravenous for the immediate delivery of anything supersized but my desire to even sip water was utterly nonexistent. Where was Miss Big Eyes who could polish off a large pizza or empty an entire (large) bag of chips in one sitting?

Apparently being repulsed by the idea of food and simultaneously starving is a common phenomenon. There is a myriad of reasons a person can feel famished yet have no desire to eat. Excluding anorexia, chemotherapy is a major culprit, followed by an assortment of medications, chronic illnesses, and mental health conditions like depression, stress, or anxiety.

According to Google, a bout of the cold or flu (or COVID-19 vaccine) can also destroy a person’s appetite. It’s hard to want those fresh-from-the-oven cookies when you can’t smell them through a stuffed-up nose. Dehydration from night sweats can also reduce your appetite, even on an empty stomach.

As I laid on what felt like my deathbed, a lightbulb went off in my head and a voice spoke. Sounding very much like my own, it said, “Oh, hey! Weed’s given me munchies in the past.” Somehow, I dragged my emaciated and ragged self to a cannabis store near my apartment and asked the budtender for help.

When I explained my dilemma, he prescribed Namaste’s Ultra Sour flower without a blink of hesitation. It turns out I wasn’t the only one looking for my post-COVID vaccine appetite in a pot shop.

I took my extra-strength sativa-dominant strain home and treated it like an important remedy from the pharmacist. After a few tangy tokes, I crawled back into bed, crossed my fingers, and hoped for my everyday bottomless pit to return.

A chill blend of MK Ultra and East Coast Sour Diesel, Ultra Sour produces ample notes of deep pine and lemon diesel. The invigorating citrus flavor reminded me of drinking lemonade on a hot summer day, and the feeling was just as refreshing. The ultra-powerful Ultra Sour strain produces buds the color of whipped avocado sprinkled with bright auburn pistils and trichomes that shimmer and shine with up to 25 percent THC.

For cannabis cultivators, Ultra Sour is a strain that will thrive outdoors, indoors, and in a greenhouse. The plant typically reaches a height of about five feet and flowers at nine to 10 weeks, with a healthy yield of 450-500 gm/m2 come harvest.

In less than 20 minutes, without even thinking, I found myself up and foraging in the kitchen for a cheeseburger and large fries that, of course, weren’t there. My overall sense of wellbeing and energy also bounced back in full force. The cannabis plant never ceases to show me it’s magic. I fed myself whatever I had in the kitchen (probably a stale baguette) until I could hardly remember what it felt like to starve. Since then, I’ve gained seven pounds and am currently in pursuit of a high-quality weight loss strain if you have recommendations.
