Death toll hits new high for second straight day

Nevada reported 21 more deaths from COVID-19 on Wednesday, setting an all-time high in total deaths reported for the second straight day.

Twenty deaths were reported Tuesday morning.

The latest numbers bring the overall death toll from the virus to 780 as of July 28. The Nevada Department of Health and Human Services has previously noted that not all deaths reported in one day occurred during that same day.

The state also reported 870 new cases of COVID-19. Overall, 45,806 Nevadans have been diagnosed with COVID-19 since the pandemic began, about one out of every 67 Nevada residents. 

Hospitalizations fell by 37 over the past day. There are currently 895 confirmed cases and 215 suspected cases of the coronavirus in Nevada hospitals. Of those, 325 patients are in the ICU.

The daily testing positivity rate — which indicates how many tests returned positive — fell to 12.6%. The World Health Organization recommends a positivity rate of 5% or below for 14 consecutive days prior to reopening.

Clark County accounted for 86% of all COVID-19 cases in the state as well as the highest rate of cases based on its population. The southern Nevada county had a case rate of 1,697 per 100,000 people. Washoe was second with 4,861 total confirmed cases. Washoe’s incidence rate was at 1,016 cases per 100,000 people. Carson City has 300 confirmed COVID-19 cases to date.

  • Number of hospitalizations for confirmed cases: 932, up by 53 people. 
  • Hospitalizations from suspected cases: 215, down by 18 people.
  • ICU hospitalizations: Increased to 319, up by nine people.
  • Testing rate: 17.5 per 1,000 people per week.
  • Total number of tests: 596,795, up by 11,059.
  • Total people tested: 456,602, up by 6,882.

Washoe County reports 38 new COVID-19 cases, one new death Tuesday

Health officials are reporting 38 new COVID-19 cases and one new death in Washoe County on Tuesday, according to the Regional Information Center.

A man in his 70s is the latest announced death due to the coronavirus in Washoe County. An investigation is underway to determine whether he had underlying health conditions.

The 38 new cases were discovered via a total of 735 new tests administered over the past day for a single-day positive test rate of 5.2%. Washoe County’s seven-day rolling positive test rate is at 6.8%. Both figures are below the state rates of 18.1% and 14.6%, respectively.

The number of active cases is 1,217 – down 70 since Monday.

Here’s a look at the rest of the COVID-19 statistics in Washoe County:

  • Total COVID-19 cases reported since the start of the pandemic: 4,861; 38 more cases since July 27
  • People who have recovered from the illness: 3,536; 107 more than previously reported
  • Current hospitalizations: 87; up 20 since July 27
  • People who have been discharged from the hospital: 348, five more than previously reported 

Nevada reports highest daily total with 20 more COVID-19 deaths; hospitalizations up

Nevada reported 20 more deaths from COVID-19 on Tuesday, the highest number of coronavirus fatalities reported by the state in a single day since the pandemic started.

Total deaths in Nevada moved closer to the 800-mark as the latest numbers bring the overall death toll from the virus to 759 as of July 27. The previous record for daily deaths reported was 15 from July 19. The Nevada Department of Health and Human Services has previously noted that not all deaths reported in one day occurred during that same day.

New cases of COVID-19 topped 1,000 as the state approached 45,000 confirmed cases since the pandemic started. Hospitalizations also jumped by 53 more confirmed cases from the virus.

The daily testing positivity rate — which indicates how many tests returned positive — rose to 18.1% while the seven-day moving average fell to 14.6%. The World Health Organization recommends a positivity rate of 5% or below for 14 consecutive days prior to reopening.

Clark County accounted for 86% of all COVID-19 cases in the state as well as the highest rate of cases based on its population. The southern Nevada county had a case rate of 1,662 per 100,000 people. Washoe was second with 4,823 total confirmed cases. Washoe’s incidence rate was at 1009 cases per 100,000 people. Carson City has 288 confirmed COVID-19 cases to date.
