Martinsville-region COVID-19/coronavirus daily update from state, nation and world: Aug. 19 | Local News
Seven more people have died of COVID-19 in the West Piedmont Health District — half the number of deaths for all of Virginia in today’s report. Four new deaths of Henry County Residents and three in Patrick County were reported by the Virginia Department of Health. There is no additional information available at this point. This brings the total number of deaths in the district to 25. There were 23 new cases and eight new hospitalizations also reported in the district. Patrick County had the most new cases, with 10, and hospitalizations, with four. That’s where an outbreak occurred with dozens of cases at a senior care facility. Similarly Mulberrry Creek, the senior care facility in Martinsville has a new outbreak of cases — 18 of them. Administrators describe their steps to deal with the outbreak, but some employees raise questions about those. Across the nation colleges and universities that had started in-person classes either are calling them off or delaying. This news emerges as students in Virginia return to campuses. Notre Dame and Michigan State were two big names added to that list on Wednesday. Other schools cited new out breaks as students settled into routines and dormitories. Cases of COVID-19 in the United States today will surpass 5.5 million — and likely 110,000 in Virginia. But the state with top case growth on Tuesday was neighboring North Carolina.
