School begins tomorrow in Martinsville and Henry County, but all students will remain at home learning remotely as the number of COVID-19 cases in Virginia surpasses 100,000 and across the U.S. the number nears five million. Meanwhile, in addition to sports, Henry County and Martinsville schools have also canceled all extracurricular activities for the fall. The Martinsville School Board is set to meet for a regular meeting Monday evening and then Superintendent Zebedee Talley will present the status of the school system under the pandemic to Martinsville City Council at their meeting on Tuesday. The Virginia Department of Health reports this morning there have been 100,086 cases and 2,326 deaths statewide. Some 8,369 people have been hospitalized. Henry County has had 588 cases, with 66 hospitalizations and 7 deaths. Martinsville has had 209 cases, with 34 hospitalizations and 3 deaths. Patrick County has had 157 cases including 33 hospitalizations and 4 deaths. Franklin County has had 172 cases, 7 hospitalizations and 1 death. Danville has reported 405 cases, and Pittsylvania County has had 487. Johns Hopkins University’s real-time map showed 19,670,853 cases worldwide and 727,579 deaths. In the U.S. there are 4,998,802. There have been 162,430 deaths in the U.S.
