New COVID-19 cases up more than 40% in Middlesex County

New cases of the coronavirus totaled 1,801 in Middlesex County for the week ending Sunday, up more than 40% from the 1,279 reported the previous week, according to a USA TODAY Network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data.

Eight county residents died of COVID-19 last week.

Throughout the pandemic, Middlesex County has reported 322,822 cases and 3,942 deaths. Two weeks ago, Massachusetts changed how deaths are reported, removing several thousand deaths from the official tallies.

Vanessa Jean-Baptiste, a registered nurse in the intensive care unit at Northern Westchester Hospital in Mount Kisco, dons PPE equipment before entering the room of a patient with COVID-19 March 1, 2022. Two years into the COVID19 pandemic, Jean-Baptiste continues to work three 7:00 pm to 7:00 am shifts a week in the hospital's ICU.

New cases were up statewide as well, although not as sharply. The state reported 6,240 new cases of the virus that causes COVID-19 last week, up 18.5% from the 5,264 new cases reported the week before. Forty-three Massachusetts residents died last week of COVID-19.

New cases were up even more modestly, 5%, at the national level.

Worcester County reported 522 cases last week, up 5.4% from the 495 cases reported. Four county residents died of COVID-19. Throughout the pandemic, Worcester County has reported 191,088 cases and 2,563 deaths.
