New COVID-19 cases up more than 40% in Middlesex County
New cases of the coronavirus totaled 1,801 in Middlesex County for the week ending Sunday, up more than 40% from the 1,279 reported the previous week, according to a USA TODAY Network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data.
Eight county residents died of COVID-19 last week.
Throughout the pandemic, Middlesex County has reported 322,822 cases and 3,942 deaths. Two weeks ago, Massachusetts changed how deaths are reported, removing several thousand deaths from the official tallies.
New cases were up statewide as well, although not as sharply. The state reported 6,240 new cases of the virus that causes COVID-19 last week, up 18.5% from the 5,264 new cases reported the week before. Forty-three Massachusetts residents died last week of COVID-19.
New cases were up even more modestly, 5%, at the national level.
Worcester County reported 522 cases last week, up 5.4% from the 495 cases reported. Four county residents died of COVID-19. Throughout the pandemic, Worcester County has reported 191,088 cases and 2,563 deaths.
Norfolk County reported 616 new cases last week, up 44.6% from the 426 new cases reported the previous week. Five county residents died of COVID-19. Throughout the pandemic, Norfolk County has reported 130,476 cases and 1,870 deaths.

Massachusetts is second nationally in its share of people receiving at least one shot, with 97.1% of its residents at least partially vaccinated. The national rate is 76.9%, a USA TODAY analysis of CDC data shows. The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, which are the most used in the United States, require two doses administered a few weeks apart.
In the week ending Sunday, Massachusetts reported administering another 28,584 vaccine doses, including 7,753 first doses. In the previous week, the state administered 34,435 vaccine doses, including 10,714 first doses. In all, Massachusetts reported it has administered more than 14.4 million total doses.
A total of 1,692,177 people in Massachusetts have tested positive for the coronavirus since the pandemic began, and 20,072 people have died from the disease, Johns Hopkins University data shows. In the United States nearly 80 million people have tested positive and 976,702 people have died.
