Crispy Air Fryer Chickpeas
Air Fryer recipes continue to be my top request and I am not surprised so I am going to share at least one new air fryer recipe here each week! I make these Crispy Air Fryer Chickpeas all the time, they get nutty and crunchy when air fried. They make the perfect snack or add a nice crunch to salads or bowls. You can use any spice combination you like – the possibilities are endless. If you don’t have an air fryer, follow my recipe for Roasted Chickpeas in the oven. For more chickpea recipes try my Air Fryer Falafel.
While creating my air fryer cookbook, I tested many different air fryers and really like the 7 quart GoWISE Air Fryer, which is powerful yet affordable. I also like the large basket that fits more food and a whole chicken.
Why I Love Making Crispy Air Fryer Chickpeas
- Nutrition: Chickpeas, also known as garbanzo beans, pack in a lot of nutrition. They are an excellent source of fiber and protein, so they will keep you full for longer. Plus, they have tons of vitamins and minerals, like zinc and folate.
- Vegetarian: On days I want to go meatless, chickpeas are one of my favorite sources of plant based protein.
- Price: A can of chickpeas costs more or less a dollar, making them a very budget-friendly snack. You can buy packaged crunchy chickpeas, but they are so much more expensive than making them at home.
Air Fryer Chickpea Seasoning Ideas
You can use whatever spices you want for these crispy chickpeas. They are a blank canvas, so get creative! Here are some ideas:
- Cajun seasoning
- Garlic salt
- Blackened seasoning
- Montreal steak seasoning
- Za’atar
- Tajin
- Curry powder
- Grated Parmesan cheese
- Ranch seasoning (garlic and onion powders, salt, pepper, and dried parsley and dill)
How to Roast Chickpeas in the Air Fryer
- Start with dry chickpeas: It’s important to start with dry chickpeas or they won’t get crisp and if they do, they won’t stay crisp. So, first things first – rinse and drain the chickpeas and let dry on paper towels, I usually just leave them out an hour while I do other things.
- Air Fry: Air fry the chickpeas for 12 to 14 minutes at 380 degrees, shaking the basket every five minutes. When they are crunchy and golden brown, they’re ready.
- Season After: Pour the chickpeas into a bowl, spritz with olive oil, and season with spices while they are still hot. Seasoning them before you air fry can result in burnt spices.
Crispy Chickpea Tips:
To ensure your chickpeas get crispy, here are a couple of tips:
- Start with dry chickpeas: Make sure the canned chickpeas are air dried on paper towels before you cook them for best results. Chickpeas that are wet or damp won’t crisp up, and if they do, they won’t stay that way into the next day. Spread the chickpeas out on dry paper towels. Place another towel on top of them, and move the towel across the chickpeas.
- Air Dry: I usually let them sit on my counter after at least an hour if I have the time.
- Re-crisp: If leftover chickpeas get soft you can pop them back in the air fryer 2 to 3 minutes to crisp them back up.
