Extracted & Concentrated Review: Quatreau

The rush of natural cucumber and mint-flavored sparkling water was cold and as thirst-quenching as I wanted it to be. I decided to chug the first half of my first cannabis-infused bevvy and savor the rest. It was exquisite and now I want more.

Backed by alcohol company Constellation Brands, licensed pot producer Canopy Growth says their cannabis beverage, Quatreau, is about “taking back me time.” I thought about this and sipped the tall sweaty can. After about 20 minutes, my typically tense body and mind began to open and unwind. My spirit lifted.

With 20 mg of hemp-derived CBD, no added sugar and only 25 calories per 12 oz. serving, Canopy Growth’s infused beverages are a discrete alternative to smoking weed and an alluring alternative to drinking alcohol. Cannabis-infused beverages like sparkling and flat waters or teas seem like a more refined (and healthier) way to be social. Inconspicuous cans of lemon and ginger THC tonic or raspberry and lime CBD soda could easily assimilate into art shows, concerts, and other events.

In Canada, cannabis beverages and edibles may contain no more than 10mg of psychoactive THC per serving (which is like a puff of a joint), but it seems the sky’s the limit for pain-relieving CBD. While I drained my mildly sweet, slightly bitter, and overall satisfying sparkling water in less than 10 minutes, one could easily nurse this kind of beverage for 30 minutes to an hour. Even more so, a person could safely knock back a few cans of cannabis over the course of an afternoon or evening and not be falling over.

My last sip of weed water was followed by a lovely, uplifting buzz and a delightful minty aftertaste that continued well into the next day. It was the complete opposite of a hangover, and next time I’ll try some THC.

With the potential to disrupt North America’s $200 billion alcohol market, cannabis-infused drinks are an exciting new product to enter a burgeoning community.

I’m excited to see how these beverages integrate into the market and hopefully become a refreshing new offering not only from budtenders but from bartenders too.
