Treat Colds And Flu With This Easy Herbal Steam
December 9, 2020
I always breathe better in a sauna or at a spa. There’s something about that hot, aromatic air that helps clear the nostrils and the senses! Steam baths can also be beneficial during cold and flu season. The next time you’re down and out, help ease congestion with this easy, DIY herbal steam. No spa required!
While excellent for clearing upper and lower respiratory infections, you don’t have to be sick to reap the benefits of herbal steam. This time of year can be very dry inside due to the extra heat and forced air.
Many people use humidifiers in their homes to add moisture to the air. This easy herbal steam will also do the trick if looking to help with general congestion or dry noses, recipe courtesy of Abby Artemisia, author of The Herbal Handbook For Homesteaders.
You will need:
- ½ cup of water
- 1 teaspoon of dried or 2 teaspoons of fresh thyme, oregano, or yarrow.
- 3 to 5 drops of essential oil, such as eucalyptus or peppermint.
- Large soup pot with a lid.
- Towel
How To Make It:
- Combine the water and the herbs in a large pot. Cover and bring to a boil.
- Once at a gentle boil, remove from the heat and place on a trivet.
- Add the essential oils.
- Place your head over the pot and cover yourself with a towel to trap the vapours. Be careful not to touch the pot! It will be extremely hot.
- Keep the water and reheat throughout the day as needed. Add essential oils every time you reheat.
If desired, follow up with a cup of this homemade herbal tea!
